Have you even seen mermaids and pirates galavanting around on the beach? You could see lots on New Brighton beach in June as Jamie Wardley, Richard Spence and Tom Bolland arrived to make some sand sculptures for the River Festival Wirral. Wirral Council asked Sand In Your Eye to bring their oceanic sand art to the festival as part of Imagine Wirral to help celebrate Wirral being the Borough of Culture for Liverpool City Region, 2019.
It was busy on the beach as the guys made their interactive sand sculpture of mermaids tails for people to pose behind, Jamie sculpted some fantastic dolphins to set the scene and Tom carved out the Wirral Borough of Culture logo. We brought along pirates hats and beautiful long curling locks for the mermaids, we think you’ll agree mermaid Rich looks particularly fetching, if he can only get his wig out of his eyes. Stop flapping around Rich, the tide’s coming in!
With an audience watching they tried to make a dam to protect the sand sculptures but to no avail as the waves rushed in and washed away the Borough of Culture logo, such is the perils of working on a beach. At least they weren’t hijacked by the pirates though.
It was Rich’s birthday so after a quick soak in the hot tub at the very nice cottage they were staying in, Jamie treated him to a couple of pints in the local pub where they watched Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League.
After a great night, the boys returned to the beach inspired to sculpt the Championship Trophy in recognition of Liverpool’s triumph the night before. Another Borough of Culture logo was sculpted, though the dolphins and mermaids tails had managed to escape the sea. We don’t guarantee that our beach sand art will always last but it’s nice when you come back the next day and it’s still there. The beach sculptures were designed to change each day anyway so they began making an enormous octopus and a boat, which frankly didn’t seem quite big enough to evade the octopuses tentacles! Even the festival’s fantastic security staff posed with the sand sculpture.
